污水一级处理为预处理，二级处理为主体，处理后的污水一般能达到排放标准。三级处理为深度处理，出水水质较好，甚至能达到饮用水质标准，但处理费用高，除在一些极度缺水的国家和地区外，应用较少。目前我国许多城市正在筹建和扩建污水二级处理厂，以解决日益严重的水污染问题。
