Currently, the transportation route for fruits and vegetables from Khorgos to Moscow has been available: maintenance for fruits and vegetables during the transportation process shall be paid attention to in order to ensure that the fruits and vegetables are fresh. In accordance with the characteristics of fruits and vegetables, Jianghua International Logistics Co., Ltd makes requirements for transportation of fruits and vegetables as follows:
Fast loading and transportation: the fruits and vegetables shall be loaded and transported quickly to reduce evaporation of water and degradation of nutriment and the damages caused by unsuitable environment.
Careful loading and unloading is required:which can reduce the infection of microorganism owing to mechanical damages to the fruits and vegetables. Modernization of the loading and unloading can not only reduce the labor intensity but also shorten the loading and unloading time without affecting the quality.
Avoidance of too high or too low temperature: if the temperature is too high, the respiratory actions of fruits and vegetables will strengthen, which will accelerate caducity of fruits and vegetables; if the temperature is too low, the fruits and vegetables are likely to be damaged. Therefore, the temperature shall be adjusted to the level suitable for fruits and vegetables no matter which kind of transportation means is adopted.
Selection of Transportation Means
The conditions for fruits and vegetables transportation are relatively complex, for some fruits and vegetables are afraid of hot environment while some fruits and vegetables are afraid of cold environment. Many kinds of fruits require that the temperature be kept in 0-4℃ during the transportation. However, for bananas, in order to keep the good quality, it is preferred that the temperature during the transportation be kept in 12-14℃. Some soft and succulence fruits can hardly bear mechanical damages. Although different fruits and vegetables have different requirements on the transportation conditions, the general aspects needing attentions are as follows: take quality inspection; select suitable packages for fruits and vegetables; ventilation space shall be left; keep the fruits in a temperature which are suitable for them. Currently, railway transportation is the main method to transport fruits to distant places and takes an important role in the fruit transportation to distant places.
The main transportation means to keep fruits fresh are as follows:
(1) Refrigerator wagon with cryohydrate. The cryohydrate refrigeration theory shows that the temperature produced by cryohydrate can be as low as -21.2℃. However, actually, for refrigerator wagon with cryohydrate, when the outer temperature is 25℃, the lowest temperature in the wagon is about -8℃. In China, B11 refrigerator wagons with refrigerator on the top are main refrigerator wagons, for which 6 saddle-shaped refrigerators are averagely distributed on the top and each refrigerator has two cryohydrate tanks and on each side, three cryohydrate tanks are connected sharing one drainer. Therefore, there are two drainers on each side. The volume of each refrigerator is 1.7 cubic meters and a wagon can carry cryohydrate of 10.2 cubic meters, which is about 6-8 tons. The wagon is equipped with polystyrene as the thermal insulation material. Ground joist is installed on the bottom. Ventilation battens are set on side walls and end walls to keep the cold air flowing and to make the temperature of the wagon average. When cryohydrate melts to certain degree, more cryohydrate shall be added. Therefore, cryohydrate stations are set along the railway every 350-600 kilometers. These stations are equipped with cryohydrate platform, storage for cryohydrate and other equipment or removable cars. According to experience of commerce department in Guangdong, for B8 refrigerator wagon with refrigerator on the top, when all cryohydrate tanks are filled with cryohydrate and the outer temperature is 25—30℃, the consumption volume of cryohydrate within 24 hours is 1.8—2.0 tons and from then on, the consumption volume will become about 0.8 ton every 24 hours. In general situation, the temperature in B8 wagons is relatively steady.
(2) Mechanically refrigerated wagon. Trains with mechanically refrigerated wagons are B16, B17, B18, B19, B20, etc. B16 has 23 wagons and B17 has 12 wagons, which adopts concentrated power generation and refrigeration. For B19, B18 and B20, which respectively have 10 wagons, 5 wagons and 9 wagons, the power generation is concentrated while the refrigeration is independent and draught fans are installed in wagons to make the air flow and to strengthen the refrigeration effect. For mechanically refrigerated wagons, the temperature decreases quickly and the refrigeration effect is good. With electric heaters, it is easy to realize the automobile control. There is no need to add cryohydrate in the middle way, which makes the transportation speed become relatively fast.
(3) Transportation using open wagon with cryohydrate. At present, refrigerator wagons with cryohydrate and mechanically refrigerated wagons are not enough. In many situations, a method called "folk refrigerator" is adopted in the fruits and vegetable transportation. The method to keep low temperature is to pile cryohydrate, construct cryohydrate walls in wagons or put cryohydrate in gaps among products and then pave the floor of the wagons, wrap other sides of the wagons and cover the products with straws and quilts.
(4) Transportation of cold-proof wagon. Cold-proof transportation is the main method to transport fruits in the winter of northern area of China. When the outer temperature is above -5 ℃, boxcars can be used to transport the fruits, in which brans of 2-3cm should be paved on the floor and straw curtains should be hanged on the walls of the boxcar and covered on the products to protect the product. If the outer temperature is not less than -15℃ and the transportation period is within 7 days, the refrigeration wagon with anti-cold equipment can be adopted. In this condition, the drainers may be plugged up with straw and the floor can be paved with straw. Straw in corners of the wagon should be thicker for fruits in the corners are likely to be damaged by the cold weather..
