Shell proceeds with cracker hike

Royal Dutch Shell says it has taken a final investment decision to debottleneck its steam cracker at Bukom Island, Singapore. The project, which is expected to increase the plant’s olefins and aromatics capacity by more than 20%, was first announced last year. Engineering work for the debottlenecking will take place during the cracker’s next maintenance turnaround.
The Bukom cracker opened in March 2010 and is the main component of the Shell Eastern Petrochemicals Complex (SEPC), Shell’s largest-ever petrochemicals investment. The cracker is integrated with Shell’s largest refinery, also on Bukom Island, and with a world-scale ethylene glycol (EG) plant at nearby Jurong.
SEPC currently has capacity for 800,000 m.t./year of ethylene; 750,000 m.t./year of EG; 155,000 m.t./year of butadiene; 450,000 m.t./year of propylene; and 230,000 m.t./year of benzene.
